Scottish cashmere and woollen specialists Johnstons of Elgin has appointed Simon Cotton as chief executive.
The Cashmere World Forum was graced by the presence of representatives of private and public institutions from China, Mongolia, Afghanistan, Nepal and Italy as well as The China Chamber of Commerce for Import & Export of Foodstuffs, Native Produce and Animal By-Products (CFNA).
The Spanish textile giant has reported net income for the first half of the year up to €951 million, ahead of the €934 million average estimate of analysts polled by Bloomberg. Inditex posted a 6 percent rise in sales to €7.7 billion in the first half to July 31st, also beating forecasts, compared with a 17 percent rise in the same period last year.
Described as the new frontier for cashmere, Afghanistan is currently the third largest global source of the fibre behind China and Mongolia. Concerted efforts to improve the colour and quality of the cashmere, combined with the introduction of value added processing, is helping Afghanistan make stable financial gains. The countries that produce commercial quantities of cashmere are China with 70% of the world’s output, Outer Mongolia at 15-20%, Iran and Afghanistan at a combined 10-15%. There are some small weights of cashmere produced in the Central Asian Countries of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan, in Turkey, India, Australia, New Zealand and Pakistan, but these quantities are small in comparison to the 3 primary producers listed above.
