Italy - Leather production halted until April 3
25 March 2020

Leather manufacturing in Italy has come to a halt after the prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, announced additional measures to try to control the spread of Covid-19, reports Leatherbiz.

On March 21, Mr Conte said all manufacturing in Italy must stop, except in a limited number of exceptional sectors, such as food production and distribution. Leather was not among the exceptions.

These measures will be in place from March 23 until April 3.

On March 23, one of the country’s largest tanning groups, Gruppo Mastrotto, confirmed that it had temporarily stopped producing leather to comply with the government’s orders but said it would be ready to start again “with speed and efficiency” on April 3.
