Whether it's velvet, suede, or fuzzy, all the interesting textures can be seen on street style stars everywhere (even on their handbags!) lately. Paired with simple garments, these clutches can serve as a talking point everyone will ask about.
Spring/summer 2018 is the season of sensory overload: on the catwalks, an array of tantalising textures – from fuzzy mohair to plush terry – gave rich depth to the looks
Fur was the thing this year and it graced the fall 2018 bags in various iterations; as both a kitschy cool fabric and as a luxurious accent on sleek leather clutches. Fur has a warm and comforting aspect and it effortlessly adds density to a cold weather look. Fur plays well with other materials, particularly leather, cotton, and crocodile skin.
This season fur was less aristocratic and more shaggy-chic, with a grandmother’s closet feel. The fall/ winter 2018-2019 handbag trends demonstrated that fur could be a stand-alone act. This truism was made manifest with Dries van Noten’s shaggy-chic mustard bag; part Flowers in the Attic, part eccentric cat lady cool.
Moschino jumped on the furry-quaint bandwagon with its Andy Warhol style yellow wristlet. Fur also popped up in Moschino’s estate sale chic orange purses for fall 2018, where fur cropped out of a chic leather design in a kitschy manner.
One of the most whimsical imaginings we saw was at Jeremy Scott, where a furry rainbow backpack rocked the runway. Consider it a downtown-cool take on the back to school style.
Just when you thought this trend was only for the experimental among us, Oscar de la Renta released a lush furry purse that looks absolutely unrestrained in its glamorous potential.
If corresponding colours aren’t your thing, mix feelings — and prints — this spring. For inspiration, look to Stella Tennant’s opening look at Balenciaga: a striped blue banker-shirt, plaid kilt and sunset-print thigh-high boots. Try sizes of all stripes, as seen at Louis Vuitton, or mix Gucci’s horse-print dresses with leopard-print coats. Further inspiration can be had at Prada, which cuffed comic strip t-shirts with rolled-up striped shirt sleeves; Hillier Bartley, which wrapped trouser suits with fishnet body stockings; and Miu Miu, which layered glazed black lace dresses over geometric-print knits. Even easier, throw a textured baseball or varsity jacket over sequinned slip dress with ankle boots — as seen at Coach 1941 — or grunge it in army-style coat over lace dress like at Alexander Wang.
Almost every bag at Altuzarra was covered in a fuzzy white or black fur, from clutches to saddlebags, channeling winter in a whimsical way that gives a nice counter to all the summery clothing.
At Sachin & Babi, a loudly colored fur trim decorated the edge of bags and clutches, a design choice that ended up working well because the main print of the bag was matched to the outfit. We saw some furry boxes at Marni, Simone Rocha, Roberto Cavalli, and more.
