15 March 2019

China’s leather and footwear manufacturers generated sales revenues of $US166.7 billion in 2018, an increase of 4.1% compared to the figure for 2017.

Tanners contributed US$18.7 billion towards this total and produced 500 million square-metres of leather in the course of the year. These figures represent an increase of 5.5% in value, but a decrease of more than 20% in volume.

Imports of hides and skins for processing in Chinese tanneries last year fell by 10.5% in volume and by 25.5% in value. China’s tanners spent just over US$1.6 billion on imported raw material in 2018. Export revenues for the leather sector as a whole were flat at just under US$80 billion.
