Italian footwear manufacturers’ association Assocalzaturifici ran a number of initiatives in 2017 for the benefit of people in need.
Working with aid organisation Humana, Assocal arranged for its member companies to send factory seconds and other unsold shoes to Florence-based social enterprise Sipario. Here, Sipario artisans assessed the shoes, reconditioned the ones in need of repair and either sold them in its own charity shop or shipped them for schoolchildren in Malawi to wear.
As part of this initiative, which had the name ‘Lending a hand with our feet’, Assocal even convinced its main research and testing partner, CIMAC, to donate suitable shoes it has kept in its archive.
Across all sources, the initiative amassed more than 2,500 pairs of shoes before the end of the year.
To increase its support of Humana’s work, Assocalzaturifici also sold off the original prints of photographs of high-end Italian shoes that fashion photographer Giovanni Gastel shot at the Micam exhibition in 2017 and donated the proceeds to the aid organisation.
