Russia - Beef producer eyes slice of leather market
09 November 2017

Russian meat producer Miratorg has announced plans to build a leather processing facility in the western region of Bryansk Oblast, where it already operates a large cluster dedicated to beef production.

The president of the company, Viktor Linnik, made the announcement in October. It will invest nearly USD50 million in the facility, which it hopes will be operational by the end of 2018.

He explained that the new facility will eventually have the capacity to process 1,500 tonnes of raw hides each month. This will allow it to produce nearly 150,000 square metres of semi-finished leather for use in the furniture and automotive industries. The company has suggested its customers will include Porsche, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Mr Linnik has said the site will be equipped with “the most modern equipment”, which he believes will give it an advantage over competitors with older processing facilities.

Miratorg revealed it has already invested in “advanced waste treatment facilities” to ensure the new facility meets the required environmental standards.
