United Nations Agency the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has given new estimates for cattle slaughter and availability of hides for 2020 and 2021, the most recent years for which it has given figures, reports Leatherbiz.

In its most recent estimates at the end of the first quarter of this year, the Rome-based organisation put the global cattle herd size at just over 1.5 billion head in 2021, up very slightly, by 0.4%, on the figure for 2020.

It estimated the total number of raw hides that the meat and livestock sector generated in 2021 at 331.9 million, which is an increase of 1% compared to its estimate for 2020.

As an illustrative figure, the Leather and Hide Council of America has calculated that only around 55% of the world’s supply of hides makes its way into the leather value chain.
