The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has joined forces with the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) to hold a workshop on eco-tanning processes in Kenya, writes ILM.

The focus of the workshop will be the eco-production and preservation of green hides/skins, green tanning technologies and sound management of tannery waste.

It will also cover long-term solutions for the challenges of modern international green leather product trade as well as discussions of legal framework conflicts that currently exist in the sector.

The overall objective is to build capacities in the leather industry by training key players in the private sector, government and Kenyan national and regional academia on the implementation of green and sustainable tanning technologies.

An additional goal is to establish a joint forum model for legal framework discussions governing integration and implementation of current green sustainable leather tanning in Kenya and the East African Community (EAC) region.

Reportedly, the proposed capacity building will enable the members of the East Africa Hides and Skins Association to minimise defects and wastage at the production stages to improve their incomes and livelihoods.

The workshop will be held from July 19-20, 2023, online and at the Best Western Plus Meridian Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya. Find out more on the UNCTAD event page.
