Brazil at All China Leather Exhibition (ACLE) 2017 - Leather fair in Shanghai to reunite 18 Brazilian companies

Brazilian leather’s number one importer will soon host one of the most important leather fairs in the world, between August 30th and September 1st. The All China Leather Exhibition (ACLE) in Shanghai, China, will be attended by 18 Brazilian business groups showing off their products with the support of Brazilian Leather – a project to encourage exports of leather from the country developed by the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB) and by the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil). Business of around US$130 million is expected to result from ACLE.

This year the fair takes place amid an expected upswing in business in China, where imports have cooled off in several segments during recent years. In the specific case of Brazilian leather, the first half of the year showed growth of 2.6% in area exported to China/Hong Kong compared to 2016, which may signal a positive ACLE for Brazilian tanneries. “It’s an important moment for the leather sector, which can serve to support the definition of corporate strategies for the remainder of the year and the beginning of 2018,” said CICB’s Executive Chairman, José Fernando Bello.

In addition to the 18 companies showing their products at their stands, Brazilian leather will be represented in an exclusive CICB and Brazilian Leather project space. They will also exhibit the Leather Preview for Summer 2019 there. “This collection of hides was seen first at Inspiramais in July. They’re pieces that travel with our project to the principle world fairs, as an interesting showcase of our creative potential that also helps generate business”, said Letícia Luft, manager of Brazilian Leather. It generates business, she explains, because it presents innovative articles from different tanneries (some but not all of which are present at the fair), multiplying contacts and visibility for participating companies in the Brazilian Leather project.

On the eve of ACLE, the Brazilian Leather project will participate in the 3rd World Leather Congress, which also taking place in Shanghai. The theme is “The Leather Revolution: how the Industry will Respond”, and the event has been supported by the Brazilian project since its launch. Panels and talks with leading global industry experts will discuss trends and prospects for leather in the world, including aspects such as growth in the automotive segment, e-commerce, industry in China, marketing, and raw materials.

About Brazilian Leather – as a Brazilian leather sector internationalization project, Brazilian Leather is conducted by the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB) in partnership with Apex-Brasil (the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency). There are several strategies for consolidating the national product in foreign markets, two of which are: encouraging tanneries to participate in major trade fairs around the globe, and business missions focused on closer relations between Brazilian suppliers and buyers from other countries.
