Protecting the Use of the Term “Leather”

The EU has voted to protect traditional meat names, such as “steak” and “burger,” from being used for plant-based products. The logic is straightforward: words matter. So, if that principle applies to meat, shouldn’t it also apply to leather? By One4Leather.


Across Europe, the term “leather” is still used to describe materials made from fossil-based plastics. This confuses consumers and blurs the line between genuine and imitation. A clear EU-wide rule reserving the term “leather” for natural, animal-derived materials would bring the same transparency and trust that lawmakers now demand for food, helping drivers choose interiors that truly reflect their values.
