Following the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)’s second Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation in Rome, Nicolò Cinotti, Secretary General of the International Poultry Council (IPC), outlined five key insights shaping the future of global livestock systems. By ILM.
Speaking alongside Donald Moore, Carel du Marchie Sarvaas, Altantuya Tseden-Ish, Dr Kerry Senior, Altaf S. A. Al Sabah, Jenna Sarich, Piercristiano Brazzale and Ruaraidh Petre, Cinotti emphasised that sustainability in livestock production is a challenge to embrace rather than avoid. He highlighted the need for stronger political support, better data and clearer narratives to feed a growing population.
Collaboration across international organisations, farmers, integrators and the private sector was another central theme of the discussion, while acknowledging the diversity of livestock systems worldwide from smallholders to large integrators. Cinotti reflected that change must be farmer-driven, rooted in practical solutions and that animal health remains paramount to food security, biosecurity, welfare and combating zoonotic disease through a One Health approach.
In a LinkedIn post, Cinotti thanked FAO and Thanawat Tiensin, Assistant Director-General, Director of the Animal Production and Health Division, and Chief Veterinarian at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), for convening the dialogue, noting the importance of international cooperation in building a more sustainable livestock sector.
