Europe - Cowhide heading for exclusion from the EUDR, writes Euractiv

According to Euractiv, a Brussels-based news agency closely monitoring the dynamics of EU institutions, bovine leather is moving toward exclusion from the EUDR. The process of simplifying the Anti-Deforestation Regulation is underway, and the publication of the EU Commission’s legislative act is expected in the coming days. Among the issues under discussion is the possibility of maintaining bovine leather in Annex I at all stages of processing, since the material, as verified by the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, is not a driver of deforestation. Towards exclusion from the EUDR

According to Euractiv, we were saying, the Commission’s current position is to proceed with the exclusion of bovine leather. If this rumor were to be confirmed in the delegated act, the outcome would not be a given. The document would first undergo consultations and then be submitted to the European Council and Parliament for their opinion. The process is still long, and the EU institutions have already demonstrated their unpredictability. We don’t need to go back too far to explain what we’re referring to. On September 23, the Commission announced its intention to postpone the entry into force of the EUDR until 2027, only to retract its statement on October 22 (provisionally confirming entry into force in 2026) and then settle the dispute on November 26 with the effective postponement to 2027. In short, Brussels has accustomed us to sudden (and unpredictable) changes in direction.
