One4Leather: The Uses and Circularity of Leather

Did you know cows are nature’s recyclers?

Globally, around 95% of what cattle eat is inedible to humans. For dairy cows, up to one-third of their diet is made up of agricultural byproducts like almond hulls, beet pulp, citrus pulp and brewers’ grains. Beef cattle also play their part, with byproducts making up to 20% of feedlot rations.

Rather than becoming waste, cows transform these byproducts into an essential protein we depend on.

And it doesn’t stop there. Just as cows transform byproducts into protein, their hides are given a second life as leather. Without leather, billions of square feet of this natural material would end up in landfill every year.

This is what real circularity looks like:

  • Cows upcycle byproducts
  • Cows provide milk, beef and hides
  • Hides become leather that lasts decades

Unlike synthetics made from fossil fuels, leather conserves resources and prevents waste. That’s why leather belongs in the sustainability conversation.
