Surge in China Vehicle Sales Continues

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), eported that total vehicle sales in the first half of 2025 soared 11.4% to 15.65 million units, with New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) sales rising 40% to 6.94 million units.

China’s car sales hit a 2025 high in June, driven by surging NEV demand and fierce competition among top players like BYD and Geely Auto.

Vehicle sales in China rose for the fifth consecutive month in June, buoyed by the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and supportive government policies. For the China Passenger Car Association, passenger car sales are up 18.6% from the year-ago period and 13.9% month over month.

In 2023 and 2024, new vehicle sales in China surpassed 31 million units and halfway through 2025 it appears that this record figure will be broken with NEVs leading the way.

Between 20% – 25% of new vehicles in China are fitted with leather seating which amounts to 6- 7 million units in both last two years. This is a sector along with furniture and upholstery where leather demand can be found.

In fact, in a September 2024 interview with CLIA Vice President, Mr Chen Zhouang by Leatherbiz, it was revealed that automotive leather production in China had increased by 5%, propelled by surging new vehicles sales.
