The Court of International Trade has blocked President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs, though it has not addressed specific tariffs including on the automotive industry. By ILM.
The court ruled that Trump exceeded his authority by invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose broad tariffs on nearly every country, stating that the U.S. Constitution grants Congress, not the President, the exclusive power to regulate international commerce.
The ruling stems from two legal challenges: one brought by the nonpartisan Liberty Justice Center on behalf of small import-reliant businesses, and another by a coalition of 12 state governments.
The three-judge panel also blocked separate tariffs targeting imports from China, Mexico and Canada.
