BREAKING NEWS: We’re thrilled to share that Leather Naturally and Leather Working Group have submitted a combined dataset, based on life cycle assessment studies carried out by SPIN 360, which has now been adopted by the Higg Material Sustainability Index (MSI) (from Worldly).

The new dataset, which was added to the Higg MSI in October 2024, has resulted in the following updates:

• The environmental impact of bovine leather is now between 55-67% lower than the previous MSI value for leather.
  
  
• The Global Warming Potential of bovine leather has reduced by 60%, from 36.8 points down to 14.6 points!

“Leather Naturally undertook this initiative on behalf of the industry to provide an updated perspective on leather manufacturing. We thank the Leather Working Group for their partnership and celebrate this positive result, which is now recognized in the updated Higg MSI,” said Kim Sena, Head of Leather Naturally’s Impact Team.

This shows real change and paves the way towards a more nuanced understanding of the impact and sustainability of leather as a material.
