Europe - Even von der Leyen is convinced that the EUDR is thus inapplicable

Even the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen has come to terms with it. The EUDR is thus inapplicable, so either it is postponed or alternative solutions are developed. Certainly, after the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the Italian government with the Minister of Agriculture, even the heads of the community institutions take note that the Anti-Deforestation Regulation cannot enter into force, as expected, from next December 31, 2024. The EUDR is thus inapplicable

Euractiv reports on the latest meeting of the EPP (European People’s Party), where von der Leyen (pictured, Shutterstock) announced that she will quickly propose a solution to get out of the stalemate in which the EUDR has gotten itself stuck. “At present – these are the words of MEP and spokesperson for the EPP Herbert Dorfmann – the application of the anti-deforestation regulation is impossible”. The news is a reason for optimism for the tanning industry. Which, as discussed in Milan, shares the aims of the regulation, but not the methods, timing and the inclusion of bovine leather in the fateful Annex I. Now the matter is becoming completely political. The Socialists and liberals of Renew prefer to move forward with the publication of the FAQs and guidelines (which are very late). We await von der Leyen’s solution.
