Automotive - China: New Vehicle Sales set to reach New Record in 2025 Led by Strong Performance of NEVs

China’s vehicle sales grew 14.9% year-on-year to a nine-month high of 3.226 million in September 2025, following a 16.4% rise in August, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).


Sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) surged 24.6% year-on-year to 1.604 million units in September, accounting for 49.7% of all new car sales, marking the seventh consecutive monthly increase.


In the first nine months of 2025, total vehicle sales climbed 12.9%, while NEV sales surged 34.9%.


Recently, eight government departments, including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, set a target of approximately 32.3 million vehicle sales in 2025 – a year-on-year increase of around 3%. Sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) are expected to reach about 15.5 million units, marking a year-on-year growth of approximately 20%.


On a monthly basis, total car sales rose 12.9% in September, accelerating from a 10.1% rise in August.
