Automotive - Renault falls for the vegan myth

Renault to Stop Using Leather in All Cars by 2025 but Is This Really the Right Direction?

Last week I came across a news

The French carmaker Renault announced that it will stop using leather in all its vehicles by the end of 2025.

Apparently this decision came after discussions with PETA France & is part of Renault’s shift towards cruelty-free & eco-friendly car interiors.

According to PETA’s Vegan Car Interior Survey

More & more customers around the world are asking for cars that do not use animal based materials.

In response, Renault’s new models such as the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric, Symbioz & Rafale now feature seats made with recycled synthetic materials.

Renault claims that this move:

  • Helps reduce plastic waste
  • Moves away from traditional animal products
  • Aligns with evolving consumer preferences

PETA is now encouraging other car companies to follow Renault’s lead & move towards non leather interiors.

But here is where I believe we need to stop & think.

Is removing leather & replacing it with synthetic really the most sustainable & ethical decision?

Yes, synthetic materials might sound modern but are they really better for the planet?

Let us not forget, leather is a natural by product of the meat industry.

It is long lasting, biodegradable & very durable.

On the other hand, many vegan alternatives are made from plastic, even if its recycled whatever you call it, it is still plastic at the end of the day.

I believe Renault’s decision will definitely make more brands to rethink what goes into their cars.

But before we celebrate, maybe we need to ask some tough questions.

Is removing leather the best choice for the environment?

Is it just a feel good trend that might do more harm than good in the long term?

I am really curious to hear what others think.

What is your honest opinion on this? Is this the right move or not?

Please comment down your thoughts even if you disagree, would love to know your thoughts.
