Pakistan - Dealing with Waste from EID Festival

Hina Nasir writes on LinkedIn: What happens to 7 million animal hides after Eid?

We still don’t have an answer.

Every Eid, Pakistan becomes the second-largest slaughter site in the world.

But there’s no public plan for sustainable waste disposal.

  • No tracking of waste.
  • No post-Eid urban cleanup standard.
  • No incentives for hygienic slaughter zones.
  • No plan for the 10,000+ temporary butchers on the street.

Contrast this with the UAE, where digital Qurbani apps are connected to licensed abattoirs, and municipal authorities monitor post-slaughter waste.

It’s not just about animal rights.

It’s about public health.

It’s about carbon load.

And yes, it’s about showing the world that we can do things better.

This Eid, I hope we don’t just sacrifice animals.

I hope we sacrifice bad systems too.
