EU flip-flops on Compliance and Sustainability

EU WEAKENS RULES AFTER CORPORATE LOBBYING – A WIN FOR BIG BUSINESS?

The European Commission appears to have caved to corporate pressure, watering down sustainability reporting and due diligence requirements that were meant to hold companies accountable for environmental and human rights impacts.

After intense lobbying, the EU today confirmed that key transparency measures in the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) have been delayed by years.

Compliance deadlines have been pushed back, with large companies and SMEs now having up to four extra years before reporting requirements take effect.

Sector-specific reporting has also been dropped, giving industries like fashion more freedom to obscure labour practices.

There is also weakened accountability on value-chain data, reducing transparency in supply chains known for exploitative conditions.
