The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) is set to release comprehensive guidelines for calculating the carbonfootprint of leather, aimed at standardising environmental assessments across the industry. By Leatherbiz.
Ivan Kral, UNIDO’s leather project manager, introduced this initiative in Milan this February. The final guidelines will be formally presented in Milan in September 2024.
“We want to create principles for carrying out environmental assessments,” Král stated, “and we want the guidelines to be something that all companies can use in their calculations.” He emphasised the need for consistent and accurate lifecycle assessments (LCAs), highlighting that previous studies have often resulted in misleading comparisons due to varying methodologies.
