Going a step further, some also claim that their vegan leather car interiors are more \u2018sustainable\u2019 because they are leather-free. Yet, there is a delicious irony here. Because more often than not, the leather alternatives used for those interiors include materials derived from the very petrochemicals that the buyers thought they were renouncing. Report by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.one4leather.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One 4 Leather<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11642\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aplf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image_many.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"359\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aplf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image_many.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.aplf.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/image_many-500x332.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fossil-fuelled car interiors<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stephen Sothmann, President of the Leather &amp; Hide Council of America, makes this point in his excellent piece \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonews.com\/commentary\/yes-using-leather-evs-good-environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yes, using leather in EVs is good for the environment\u201d (paywall)<\/a>&#8220;. Consumers are wooed by the promise of so-called \u2018vegan leather\u2019, unaware that its composition often includes PVC or other petrochemical-derived materials. These are needed to give a durable backing to the textured side of the \u2018faux leather\u2019. Sothmann says it\u2019s not just the origin of these materials we should be worried about but \u201cthe entire process from oil extraction through the finished plastic product to what happens when its life cycle ends in disposal \u2013 including shedding plastic micro-particles. All too often that full impact is not properly attributed to vehicle interiors despite the fact that they are produced by some of the highest CO2-producing industries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can plastic be green?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>International Leather Maker found a similar story when they reported on <a href=\"https:\/\/internationalleathermaker.com\/news\/fullstory.php\/aid\/10337\/BMW_to_collaborate_with_Desserto.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BMW\u2019s collaboration with Desserto<\/a>, which creates what it calls \u201cvegan cactus leather\u201d, claimed to be a \u201csustainable, animal-cruelty-free vegan alternative\u201d to leather. However, research institute FILK found the material to be a \u201ccoated textile with compact layer (PUR [polyurethane]) and partially foamed layer (PUR [polyurethane]) filled with heterogeneous particles of organic origin\u201d plus a \u201ctextile carrier based on polyester material made by reverse coating process\u201d1. In other words, it depends on plastics derived from the petrochemicals industry. What\u2019s more, apart from its green credentials being questionable, FISK discovered that Desserto\u2019s performance levels across a range of tests were significantly less than those of leather.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leather \u2013 the real natural choice<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Irony on top of ironies, by rejecting auto leather, the poor consumer is inadvertently consigning millions of hides to landfills where they will decay and release greenhouse gases instead of being upcycled and used to create durable, long-lasting, beautiful, natural and biodegradable car interiors. It\u2019s a classic lose-lose situation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>End to greenwashing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s another important aspect to all this. Consumers are simply not getting the facts they deserve. All too often \u2018greenwashing\u2019 is luring them into doing what they think is the right thing but they are not being given all the facts. The BBC reports that the UK regulator is preparing to act on this kind of misinformation in its report \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-58645708\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Advertising regulator to clampdown on greenwashing ads<\/a>\u201d. Perhaps one day, car manufacturers will be called out on this. But the biggest irony of all is this: they had the natural, sustainable, \u2018green\u2019 option to hand all along \u2013 genuine leather.<br \/>1.
