The Institute for Creative Leather Technologies (ICLT) has been given the green light to begin its relocation after Northampton Borough Council granted planning permission for its new site.
The University of Northampton, of which the ICLT is a part, submitted plans for the former Vulcan Works site in Guildhall Road in the centre of the city at the end of 2016. It will move to the Grade II listed building from its current home at Park Campus.
ICLT director Rachel Garwood said: “It’s really exciting to bring leather back to the centre of Northampton. It will invigorate Northampton, add to the cultural quarter and give the students a better experience.”
The new facility will benefit from bespoke laboratories designed for use by students taking leather technology courses at the university. There will also be teaching spaces, offices and workshops. It could result in the creation of 300 jobs.
Construction work is expected to begin later in 2017.
