Leather Foundation Course for Fashion Professionals

APLF Academy in collaboration with Authenitcae is organising a two-day certification course for fashion professionals to understand the nature, making, usage, marketing and sustainability of leather.

Module 1 & 2 will be conducted in English. Attendee who attends both modules will obtain a certificate.

Course Outline

Module 1 – Leather Basics

Date: 20th October (Thu)
Time: 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM (UTC+7)
Location: Workshop Area in Hall 2, QSNCC

This course is designed for designers, buyers and store trainers who need to understand the characteristic of different types of leathers to design their products and educate your customers.

After the course, you will understand:
  • Definition of leather: genuine, coated, laminated, leather fibre
  • Types of leather and their applications: cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, pig, other
  • Hide & Skin marks: typical marks, and uniqueness of genuine skins
  • Tanning Process Steps
  • Leather products and their care (wet, mouldy, sunlight, chemicals)
  • How to understand leather testing

Module 2 - Sustainability of Leather

Date: 21st October (Fri)
Time: 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM (UTC +7)
Location: Workshop Area in Hall 2, QSNCC

This course is designed with fashion marketers, designers, buyers and trainers in mind, who need to promote the sustainability of your brands and how you can convey an accurate message to your customers.

After the course, you will understand:
  • Consumer behaviour towards sustainable trends
  • How to market leather as a sustainable material
  • How to find sustainable supplier
  • How sustainability accreditation bodies work
  • Leather vs alternatives – performance and sustainability

Karl Flowers

Technical Director

Authenticae Ltd


Karl Flowers is the Technical Director at Authenticae Ltd, who specialise in leather biodegradability. He started his tanning career with the Leather Industries Research Institute, LIRI (in South Africa) and has actively consulted and researched in all leather and material fields.


Karl has taught every topic of leather technology and leather science, to varying depths, from certificate level to PhD, and is currently the external examiner for the International School of Tanning Technology. Karl is consulting Technical Editor for International Leather Maker. Karl’s research focusses on understanding the sustainability and biodegradability of leather and leather-like materials, with an active interest in life cycle analysis systems.

Fashion Designer and Cool Hunting Trainer

Style Modainpelle Academy


With rich experience in leather fashion design and trend research, Italian fashion designer Patrizia Prencipe worked for many international brands, and pursued a career in Cool Hunting Trainer.


Patrizia is an ambassador of the Italian know-how and helps fashion companies to understand consumers’ desires.


Travelling and working in several different countries, she collects trends and processes information, tailoring moodboards, depending on local cultures and styles. 


She researches news, tastes, and social nuances to contribute to the success of the collection. 


Creativity has both artistic and technical sides, that you will discuss and apply with exercises, during her workshop.
