After winning one of the prizes at the Scottish Environment Business (VIBES) Awards in 2018, the Scottish Leather Group sponsored one of the categories at the 2019 event, reports Leatherbiz.
This year’s awards ceremony, the twentieth edition of the competition, took place in Glasgow in mid-November, with 12 companies emerging as winners for their commitment to sustainability in different areas of business.
Commenting on Scottish Leather Group’s decision to become a sponsor of the awards, group sustainability director, Dr Warren Bowden, said: “We were delighted to win the award for management (large) last year and, as part of our commitment towards encouraging our supply chain, we’re keen to see that our companies are recognised for their efforts too.”
He said winning the awards is hard work. Companies submit applications in the spring and, from these, a judging panel draws up a shortlist and approaches business for additional information. Following a second judging panel session in the summer, judges carry out site visits to all finalist companies before choosing the winners.
Scottish Leather Group said it was pleased to sponsor the competition, especially as one of the categories is the Circular Scotland Award, for which a company called Renewable Parts Limited, a specialist in maintaining and recycling equipment for the renewable energy sector, emerged as the winner.
Dr Bowden said efforts that began several years ago at Scottish Leather Group to “circularise manufacturing” had been something of “an industrial epiphany” and had helped the leather manufacturing group cement its place as a supplier of choice with leading automotive and aeronautical customers around the world.
He added: “VIBES is increasingly important in the Scottish industry landscape and I think that as we move to a net-zero economy, we need to recognise the contributions of companies towards that goal.”
