Germany: Chromium (VI) is banned in leather products
FNA | 02 September 2010

The European Union has recently expanded the restriction of chromium (VI) to a range of consumer products under the REACH regulation.

The old restriction was only applied to non-consumers products but the EU aims to strengthen consumer protection by extending the ban to a range of consumer products that consist leather materials such as toys, neck pouches, clothing, bags, backpacks, watch straps and chair covers.

In January 2009, Germany proposed to restrict chromium (VI) in leather materials in toys and other consumer products. The recent adoption of this proposal amended the German Consumer Goods Ordinance.
