Turkey - New national guidelines on tannery effluent discharge
29 June 2017

Turkey’s ministry for industry is to take direct responsibility for establishing new norms for common effluent treatment plants at the country’s main leather manufacturing clusters.

Wastewater treatment plants are in place at each of the main sites and are carrying out effective physical, chemical and biological treatment of tannery waste but, sources in Turkey say, there are discrepancies from region to region in the limits of chromium, sulfide, ammonium, salt, biocides, fats and so on permitted in discharge after treatment.

The ministry will now use international standards to establish new national guidelines.
