Industry - Pakistan tanners hit by transportation strike
19 May 2017

A transportation strike in Pakistan has left finished leather, leather chemicals, finished products and raw materials stranded, with importers and exporters unable to secure the movement of goods and materials to and from the country’s ports.

Anjum Zafar, chairman of the Pakistan Tanners’ Association, called on the government to bring about a resolution to the strike as quickly as possible.

He said more than 300 container-loads of materials are at a standstill, with overseas customers now threatening to cancel letters of credit, putting the country’s leather-sector companies, already struggling because of a 35% decline in business over the last two years, in an even more difficult position.
