Gold was the luxurious heavy metal of choice for the fall/ winter 2018-2019 handbag trends. Gold adornments graced bags ranging from the dainty and subtle to the bold and assertive. We love how gold has a shapeshifting temperament and can be at once glamorous and conservative.
One of the key themes in the application of the metal was textured and dynamic golden circular appliques and crisp gold hardware. These features were practical in most cases, looping the straps together, or serving as a focal point for the eye. The outcome was a lusciously elegant and symmetrically satisfying spectrum of cold weather purses.
Gold accents were opulent when paired with burgundy wine leather at Versace’s Milan show. Marni brought an opulent decadence to the trend with luscious fall 2018 purses adorned with sculptural, textured gold clasps. Oscar de la Renta used indulgently glamorous molten gold hardware clasps on his boxy purses.
At Fendi, this meant offsetting classic hues with metallic green or pink, brocade flowers, guitar-style straps and doodles. While Altuzarra finished its saddle bags in royal blue snakeskin.
For a more traditional take, gold scales topped Louis Vuitton’s mini bags with a contrasting ‘LV’ emblem and Chanel offered up its classic styles with metallic silver.
Marc Jacobs it was all about snakeskin shoulder bags fitted with opposing gold chain handles.
Gold hardware is back in a big way. The application varies from petite and subtle to bold and assertive. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but also practical: gold chain straps, handles, buckles, zippers and decorative ‘bling’ (for lack of a better word). Gold hardware attracts the eye, ties in with other accessories and adds symmetry. Pretty and practical.
