Nepali Pashmina at Cashmere World
Alpana Shrestha | 06 August 2018

Pashmina and cashmere products from Nepal

Nepali Pashmina products have become popular around the world for the warmth they provide while having a light and luxurious appearance with fine hand feel. Derived from the undercoat of the Himalayan mountain goat, Capra Hircus locally called chyangra in Nepal, pure Nepali Pashmina is among the finest cashmere fibres available, mostly 14.5-15.5 microns in diameter and therefore ideal for making premium lightweight apparel and accessories like scarves.

Although 100% Pashmina is still in high demand, cashmere silk blends have provided the much sought after product diversity in the fashion market for some time, the most popular blends being: 70% cashmere 30% silk, 80% cashmere 20% silk and 50% cashmere 50% silk. Other blends like Merino Pashmina or Modal Pashmina have also gained popularity in recent years.

One can always find Nepali exhibitors at Cashmere World, bringing high-quality cashmere products to international buyers. Following the Cashmere World last March, I had the opportunity to speak with one of the exhibitors in Kathmandu, Mr. Netra Giri of High Himalaya Garments.

Mr. Giri was happy to have exhibited his products at Cashmere World, the only trade event in the world dedicated to cashmere and fine fibres. He considered it as a successful show for his company as the quality of the buyers was good. Another plus point was that the show held in a perfect timing for the buyers who source for the following fall/winter season.

The buyers he met were mainly from Hong Kong and France. The most popular products at the High Himalaya Garments booth were hand-made Pashmina scarves from Nepal. Because Cashmere World caters to a very niche market for high-quality cashmere products. Mr. Giri will definitely participate in the Cashmere World again next year.

Cashmere World will be held in Hong Kong on March 13-15, 2019. As in the past, Fashion Access will be held alongside with Cashmere World.
